From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Wiley attempted to rile up Stormzy on Twitter by sending a volley of tweets that criticised the grime star for his Ed Sheeran collaboration.

The “godfather of grime” has taken aim at a number of fellow rappers over the years, including Stormzy and AJ Tracey, the latter of whom he recently mocked for his hit “Ladbroke Grove”, which is a nod to old-school garage music.

He claimed the only reason Jay-Z wanted to work with Stormzy was because Sheeran was involved (Stormzy actually turned down the US hip-hop star’s offer to work on their other track, “Take Me Back to London”).

Wiley tweeted: “I’m old but you was tryna work with jay z who Ed brought in the room Cos if it wasn’t for Ed that session would not of happened lol your not with us your with them #Pagan I am 10 years younger than jay z and I will merc you everyday of the week #YourEasy #TooEasy ]sic].”

The MC was referring to Stormzy’s track “Own It”, a collaboration with Sheeran and Burna Boy that appears on his new, critically acclaimed album Heavy is the Head.

Stormzy responded by branding Wiley a “pr**k” and claiming that Wiley’s anger was at odds with the direct messages he had sent.

“OK I actually think you do crack coz you dm’d me yesterday saying ‘bro omg let’s build houses in Ghana for our mums’ and now you’re here moving mad,” Stormzy tweeted.

“You are a pr**k coz you dm me all the time like it’s mad love and we’re brothers and then you come on the internet and act weird and the reason that makes you a prick is because you know I won’t ever say anything on the TL because arguing on the net has never been my style,” he added.

Wiley then responded: “You ain’t ready for smoke mike your a star go be a star and mind ya own bizness on this 1.”

After a continued back-and-forth, Stormzy dismissed Wiley’s suggestion that the pair meet to work out their differences.

“Shut up man no one wants to link you you dinosaur lol,” he said.

He added: “I love you so much but you are so annoying.”

Many fans pointed out Wiley’s hypocrisy for mocking Stormzy’s Sheeran collaboration, given Wiley also teamed up with the singer-songwriter for the track “You”, from Sheeran’s 2011 EP No 5 Collaborations Project.

Stormzy is currently on course to score the first number one of the decade with “Own It”, against Lewis Capaldi’s “Before You Go” and Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now”.
