The Oasis musician played a gig at Glasgow’s Hydro just hours after the “Purple Rain” singer was found dead in his Paisley Park recording studio.
“I was in a band once. We had an album called Standing on the Shoulders of Giants and one of those giants was Prince,” he told the cheering crowd. “So you’re going to help me pay tribute to the great man and help me do ‘Live Forever’.”
Fans have been sharing videos of the moving performance, which saw the audience bathed in a purple light as a photo of Prince formed the backdrop to the stage.
Earlier in the night, Prince hit “Let’s Go Crazy” played over the tannoy as fans began filling the arena, which itself turned purple in memory of a legend.
Prince was known not only for his own string of hits, but for the likes of “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Manic Monday” that he wrote for other singers.
The circumstances of his death are under investigation.
