An unearthed letter written by legendary rapper Tupac reveals he broke off a sexual relationship with Madonna because she was white.

The revelatory letter, which he wrote while in jail, is going up for auction in the US later this month, TMZ reports.

“For you to be seen with a black man wouldn't in any way jeopardise your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting,” it reads.

Tupac continues: “But for me at least in my previous perception I felt due to my 'image' I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was.”

The rapper acknowledges Madonna's devastation, stating: “I never meant to hurt you.”

He adds: “Please understand my previous position as that of a young man with limited experience with an extremely famous sex symbol.”

The letter, which was written on 15 January 1995 - the year before his death - will go up for auction on 19-28 July at Gotta Have Rock and Roll with a starting bid of $100,000 (£77,000). This one is expected to fetch a lot more considering the last letter written by Tupac sold for more than $170,000 (£132,000).

In 2015, Madonna revealed she had dated the rapper three years before his death in 1993.

Tupac was murdered in 1996 at the age of 25, leading to endless conspiracy theories surrounding his death.
