From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The friendship between Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks was plain to see when the latter came on stage at his London show earlier this summer for what would be their final ever performance together following Petty's death at the age of 66.

Their friendship lasted for as long as the two were making music, initially meeting in 1978 finally collaborating in 1981 with “Insider" which featured on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers record Hard Promises.

More famously, Petty and Nicks collaborated on the Fleetwood Mac star's debut solo record Bella Donna for a duet of “Stop Draggin' My Heart Around” - a classic track the two performed at London's Hyde Park in July.

“You know that Tom Petty is my favorite rock star!” Nicks told the crowd as the two celebrated Petty's 40th-anniversary tour in rock 'n' roll style.

Ahead of the performance, Petty had spent over five minutes lovingly introducing his backing singers and band members before bringing Nicks onto the stage to roaring applause from the 60,000-strong crowd.

You can watch their final ever on-stage performance below.

Petty - one of the world's most successful musicians - was found unconscious in his home in Malibu on Monday (2 October) with his family later confirming he had died.

You can find a countdown of the rockers best songs - including "American Girl," "I Won't Back Down" and "Free Fallin'" - here.
