The Who return to Isle of Wight after 34 years
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.More than three decades after they last played the event with a coruscating three-hour set, the Who announced yesterday that they will join the headline acts for next year's Isle of Wight festival.
Their 1970 show culminated in an orgy of smashed-up equipment and official recriminations and yesterday the band was promising a performance equally "fresh and dynamic".
The Who's inclusion - they will play on 12 June - was announced by Virgin Radio, which will be broadcasting the three-day festival on 11, 12 and 13 June. The Virgin presenter Pete Mitchell said: "The Who are one of the greatest live bands ever. Age doesn't seem to count - they are still as refreshing and dynamic live as they were 30 years ago, and the Isle of Wight is the perfect setting to witness their performance."
John Entwistle, the bass player, died last year, leaving Roger Daltrey, the lead singer, and Pete Townshend, the guitarist and songwriter, from the original line-up. Keith Moon, the drummer, died in 1978.
David Bowie and Stereophonics are also due to play at the event.
