Ex-boyfriends are a regular source of inspiration for the 24-year old, but “Bad Blood” centres on a mystery peer she is “straight-up enemies with”.
“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” Swift told Rolling Stone. “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’”
The “Shake It Off” singer went on to explain how the anonymous foe “basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour” by hiring people out from under her on the sly.
“I’m surprisingly non-confrontational – you would not believe how much I hate conflict,” she added, refusing to name her nemesis. “I’m not the female police, but it broke my heart because I have such a high priority on girls sticking together.”
Swift admitted that she wanted fans to know that “Bad Blood” was about a girl, despite it not being a “big girl-fight”.
“You don’t want to shade someone you used to date and make it seem like you hate him, when that’s not the case,” she said.
However, there is one song from 1989 that might just involve allusions to Swift’s former One Direction boyfriend Harry Styles. It’s called “Style” and the album is due out on 27 October.
Although not confirmed, speculation suggests that Katy Perry is the subject of “Bad Blood”. Three of Swift’s Red dancers left her world tour last year to work with Perry and appeared in her MTV Video Music Awards performance.
“I was with Taylor for the first six months,” dancer Lockhart Brownlie told The Examiner. “It was a great experience and she’s a great person to work with, but then Katy contacted us.”
Perry is also believed to have been dating Swift's ex, John Mayer, at the time.
The "Roar" singer has now posted a tweet referencing Mean Girls, although it is not explicitly directed at Swift.
"Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing," she wrote, as Twitter exploded.
