From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Lenny Kravitz will join Katy Perry as her “special guest” during the Super Bowl halftime show.

The “Dark Horse” singer announced the musician would be joining her on stage in an interview with NBC on Monday, adding “he’s the coolest!”

Kravitz also tweeted to confirm the news that he will join Perry at the University of Phoneix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday 1 February.

The yearly Super Bowl, which decides the league champion of the NFL season, has seen a number of high profile US artist perform during the halftime show in recent years.

Memorable performances include Janet Jackson’s “nipplegate” in 2004, Bruce Springsteen’s less controversial half-time show in 2009 and Beyoncé’s set in 2013, which saw her reuntied on stage with Destiny’s Child.

Last year Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ half-time show drew a record audience of 112 million viewers in the US, but was a tame performance in comparison with its forerunners.

It is unknown yet which songs Perry and Kravitz will perform together. When asked if the two artists will sing Kravit’s Grammy-winning cover “American Woman”, Perry told NBC “we’ll see”.

It is thought Perry will announce another singer to join her on stage in the next two weeks after hinting the guitarist would be her "first" special guest.
