The label was launched recently by co-presidents Alex Boateng and Alec Boateng, Ghanaian-British twins who are music industry stalwarts.
The grime artist’s previous studio album was released through #Merky and Atlantic Records UK. Stormzy is the first signing to be announced by 0207 Def Jam.
The news was confirmed earlier today, with Universal Music describing Stormzy as a “once in a generation artist” on Twitter. “Welcome to the 0207 & Universal Music family,” it wrote.
Alec Boating had previously played a vital role in signing Stormzy and his label, #Merky, to Atlantic Records, and played a large role in the campaign for Heavy is the Head, Stormzy’s 2019 album.
Prior to forming 0207 Def Jam, Alex Boating worked for a decade at Universal Music UK, heading up Island Record’s Urban Division. He was involved in campaigns for artists including Drake, The Weeknd and Nicki Minaj.
Alec Boating had worked for seven years at Warner Music, and is also a distinguished radio host, presenting BBC 1Xtra’s breakfast show for years, in addition to other specialist shows championing new British music.
Universal Music UK chairman and CEO David Joseph said in a statement: “Bringing the Boateng brothers together at 0207 Def Jam is an important moment in British culture.
“Alec and Alex have always done things their own way with success always quick to follow. They have already assembled an exceptionally talented top team with a clear vision for this exciting new chapter in the history of one of the world’s most famous labels.”
