Sam Smith’s performance at the Oscars was branded ‘off pitch’ and ‘awful’ by viewers at home, many of whom wondered “How on earth did he win the Best Original Song award?”

Since then, Smith has described his rendition of Bond song “Writing’s on the Wall” at the ceremony as the “worst moment of my life”, adding “I hated every moment of it”.

Speaking to the BBC, the Oscar winner - who saw off competition from the likes of Lady Gaga and The Weeknd - said: "That was honestly the worst moment of my life. Singing was horrible - I hated every moment of it.

“I was so nervous. That's the truth. I want to say to everyone at home, we love you." Watch the performance here.

Joined by co-writer Jimmy Napes, the “Stay With Me” singer added: "I genuinely didn't think we were going to win at all. We’re in complete shock. The whole thing's just amazing."

During his acceptance speech, Smith caused controversy by calling himself the ‘first openly gay man’ to win an Academy Award, even though numerous other gay men have.

Sam Smith isn't the first openly gay man to win an Oscar.. Nor the 2nd

The big winner of the Oscars was Leonardo DiCaprio who finally took home an award after being nominated six times. To people's surprise, Spotlight won best picture while Mad Max: Fury Road took home six awards.
