From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Rod Stewart gatecrashed a Lorraine Kelly interview with his wife Penny Lancaster on crutches.

The “Maggie May” singer made a surprise appearance in the background of a conversation between Lancaster and Kelly about his wife’s new role as a special constable with the police after appearing on Channel 4 show Famous and Fighting Crime.

Briefly stepping into the frame on crutches behind Lancaster and waving, Lancaster explained that Stewart, 76, was still recovering from ankle surgery.

“He had knee surgery, that was fantastic, he got over that quickly,” she said.

“But the ankle surgery is taking a little bit longer, but he’ll be back.”

Lancaster added that Stewart had recorded a whole new album, explaining: “That’ll be out soon when he gets to tour, which he can’t wait to do.”

Stewart’s 30th studio album Blood Red Roses was released in 2018, and topped the UK album chart.

Earlier this year, the singer revealed that his recent feud with Elton John had finally come to an end after he accused the “Rocket Man” of “money grabbing” with his farewell tour.
