The ex British pop group member said he put the first gong on the online auction giant because he has “bills to pay”. Despite being put on eBay for just £650 the Best Newcomer statuette attracted bids of £66,000 with just three days to go.
Enthused by how well the first award did, Cattermole has now put his 2002 Best Single Brit award for "Don’t Stop Movin" on eBay. The bid already stands at £65,900 but has another eight days to go.
“Due to a highly successful sale earlier on today of Paul’s ‘Best Newcomer’ Brit award which received an unprecedented amount of interest from all over the world, Paul is delighted to put for up for auction his second and final Brit Award for ‘Best Single 2002’,” reads the listing.
“Paul has decided to let myself deal with the first process of the auction due to work commitments,” it continues. “Rest assured that this a genuine Auction for the Brit award and only the most serious of buyers are welcome to take part in the bidding process. Please remember that the winning bid is legally bound and any spoof bids will be dealt with in accordance to eBay rules.”
Cattermole has heaped praise on those who bought the first Brit award and said the winning price wholly defied his initial expectations.
He tweeted: “I am amazed and know not what to say. I can’t quite believe how things have gone the past ten days. I stuck it up there on a wing and a prayer, not really expecting much too happen. I had no idea that people cared as much as they do. xx and I wanna Give Thanks, xx.”
He added: “66k that is incredible, to the point where I am blushing, so I just want to say a big thanks to everyone that sent messages. I was answering messages all week I’m sorry if you didn’t get a reply. Thankyou Xx.”
S Club 7 won the "Best British Newcomer Award" at the 2000 ceremony after landing 10 top three hits in the UK.
Cattermole offered a meet and greet with photos with "distance depending” for whoever was to wind up winning the auction for the first award. Seemingly keen to let go of his former success, he said: “It’s time to let the past be the past".
Cattermole rose to fame in 1999 with band mates Tina Barrett, Jon Lee, Hannah Spearritt, Bradley McIntosh, Rachel Stevens and Jo O'Meara in S Club 7. The pop group, who were created by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller, scored four No 1s in the UK during their heydays.
Cattermole is not the first pop star from the early 2000s to sell his Brit Award. Back in 2015, Abz Love from former boyband 5ive sold his award on eBay for £1.1m. The singer had been using it as a doorstop and wanted to buy supplies for his south Wales farm.
“All I needed was a bit of topsoil and it’s gone nuts,” Love said at the time.
