From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Pamela Hutchinson, a member of the The Emotions, has died at the age  of 61.

The news was confirmed on the group’s official Facebook page. Hutchinson was the younger sister of bandmates Sheila, Wanda and Jeanette Hutchinson.

The group’s most famous single was 1977’s “Best of My Love”, on which Hutchinson sang.

“In loving memory, we are saddened to announce the passing of our sister, Pamela Rose Hutchinson, on Friday, September 18, 2020,” reads the statement.

“Pam succumbed to health challenges that she'd been battling for several years. Now our beautiful sister will sing amongst the angels in heaven in perfect peace.”

Tributes to the singer have also poured in from elsewhere, with one fan describing her on social media as a “legendary Soul/R&B/Disco diva”.

Stand-up comedian Sinbad wrote on Twitter: “That band in heaven is gonna be a hard act to follow if God keeps calling his top people home.

“My heart goes out to the family. May God bless and keep you during this time.”

“Rest in power, Ms. Pamela Hutchinson. The Emotions gave us some of the best vocals ever,” wrote someone else.

Another tribute reads: “I am so sad to learn about the passing of Pamela Hutchinson, one of the members of the legendary group, The Emotions. I grew up listening to The Emotions and loving them because they reminded me SO much of the women in my family. My condolences to the Hutchinson family.”
