From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Groove legend Terry Callier has died aged 67.

The Chicago-born singer-songwriter who collaborated with Massive Attack and Beth Orton died in hospital surrounded by his family on Sunday.

Callier made his name as a jazz folk artist in the sixties and seventies and also appeared on Massive Attack’s single “Live With Me” in 2006. His best known singles include “Ordinary Joe” and “You Goin’ Miss Your Candyman”.

Early reports of his death were published on music websites and later confirmed by music label Mr Bongo with whom Collier worked on six albums between 2001 and 2009.

Callier’s last record, Hidden Conversations, was produced in 2009 with “Teardrop” band Massive Attack.

His funeral will take place in Chicago on Saturday 3 of November and a London memorial is being planned although the date is yet to be confirmed.

Tributes poured in for Callier on social networking site Twitter. Orton tweeted a link to a video of a collaboration between herself and Callier at London’s Jazz Café in December 2009, with the words:  “This was one of the best nights of my life. Such a privilege and joy- RIP dear Terry Callier.”

“Tim Burgess of The Charlatans posted: "The world has lost another beautiful voice. Rest in peace Terry Callier."

Gary Lightbody tweeted: "Terry Callier RIP. A great soul-folk legend. A sad day."
