Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

One Direction have seen off competition from Glastonbury headliners The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay to be be named the best live act at the Silver Clef Awards.

The boyband, who were put together during the X Factor in 2010, won the award in a public vote by picking up around a quarter of the 26,000 votes cast.

Band member Harry Styles thanked fans for voting for them at the awards, which are run by O2 and music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins.

He said: "We are over the moon. Congratulations to Nordoff Robbins on another amazing Silver Clef Awards. What an incredible charity, helping people with music therapy."

Other winners at the showbiz event, fully titled the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards, include veteran punk rockers The Clash, who will pick up the O2 Silver Clef Award, former Bee Gee Barry Gibb, who collects a lifetime achievement award, and Ray Davies, who wins the Ambassador of Rock award.

Chart star Labrinth will be recognised for his innovation in music and Alison Moyet will pick up an icon award at the annual lunch at the London Hilton today.
