From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Their cover of Blondie song “One Way Or Another” released in aid of Red Nose Day and Comic Relief became available to buy yesterday but an unauthorised version has already been shared widely eating into the potential revenue the single will raise for charity.
Band member Louis Tomlinson expressed his dismay at the leak via his Twitter profile. He wrote: “I hear the charity single has been leaked. Very sad to see. Don't forget together we are trying to raise money for Comic Relief.”
The full version leaked onto YouTube has already been removed by the video sharing site but copies have been made and are circulating elsewhere on the web.
Fans have taken to Twitter to urge each other not to listen to the leak but to download the official version and give to charity in the process.
Smallzy wrote: “One Direction's new song has leaked. Out of respect to the boys, I WON'T play it on air until it's released!”
Pop Scoop! tweeted: “One Direction's 'One Way or Another' gets leaked. I wonder how many children will starve due to lost charity money now?”
It is not the first time the band has been hampered by leaked material. In September they had to rush the radio debut of their new single forward after the track was leaked online.
The song, "Live While We're Young", was brought forward by four days after an unauthorised "poor quality" version of the video appeared online.
A statement on their behalf said: "The band did not feel that it was right or appropriate for the fans to hear the track as this illegal upload, so they have responded quickly."
A message from the group said: "We wanted our fans to see the video and hear the single in the proper way so we've moved the premiere to tonight. We're really excited about LWWY - we've worked really hard on it and we can't wait for everyone to see and hear it."
"One Way Or Another" is available from iTunes for £1.99 with all proceeds going to Comic Relief
