Your support makes all the difference.Sam Smith has confirmed that he will be heading state-side to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards in California on Sunday night.
The British singer-songwriter will make his US awards ceremony debut alongside other acts Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, 5 Seconds of Summer, Maroon 5, Beyoncé, Iggy Azalea, Usher and Nicki Minaj.
Smith has achieved worldwide critical acclaim in the wake of his first album, In the Lonely Hour, and hit singles “Money on My Mind” and “Stay With Me”.
“I have watched the VMAs every year since I was a kid,” the 22-year-old said. “I am so insanely nervous but also so honoured to be performing. This truly is a pinch yourself moment for me.”
Smith is nominated in the Artist to Watch and Best Male Video categories ahead of the annual awards event.
Presenters announced so far include Lorde, Jason Derulo, Trey Songz, Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba and Laverne Cox, Taylor Schilling, Dylan O’Brien, Demi Lovato and Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev.
Last week, Smith denied rumours that he has been lined up to follow in Adele’s footsteps and record the next James Bond theme tune.
“I think it’s something everyone would love to do, but yeah, it was all news to me,” he told NME. “I won’t say any more on it.”
