Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ten artists, including an unsigned singer-songwriter, have been hailed as the most exciting new stars of the music scene.

Ebony Day, 19, from Guildford, Surrey, has amassed more than 19 million views on YouTube and a huge following on social media.

The unsigned singer is one of 10 artists, shortlisted from 500, by MTV UK and Ireland in its Brand New For 2013 competition.

The shortlist features one unsigned artist every year. The overall winner will be announced in February, following a public vote.

The other shortlisted artists are rapper Angel Haze, electronic duo Disclosure, singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin, Haim - the Los Angeles-based band comprised of three sisters - and British rapper K Koke, who is signed to Jay Z's Roc Nation label.

Dublin band Kodaline, Londoners Little Nikki and Rascals and Chichester-born Tom Odell are also on the list.

Day also won MTV's best new unsigned act for 2013.

MTV Brand New has previously tipped the likes of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber for success before their debut releases.
