From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

On February 8, the blogs are buzzing about Brooklyn experimental rock band Yeasayer, according to The Hype Machine. Canadian electronic musician Caribou and San Diego post-rock project The Album Leaf round out the top three.

Also getting mention Monday is British electropop band Hot Chip, which released its album One Life Stand on February 1 (out February 9 in the US). The new album includes the band's single "Alley Cats," which Naïve Harmonies (www.naiveharmonies.com) calls "a quiet beauty, comfortable with itself, there for anyone who can slow down enough to listen closely... ." Hot Chip is due to begin a Europe/US tour on February 12.

Texas rock band Midlake is in the blogs following the release of its third album, The Courage of Others. Formed in 1999, the band has gained popularity with its performances at European and US music festivals, including Wintercase, End of the Road, and South by Southwest, as well as through its critically acclaimed studio albums. In contrast to the "catchier, more upbeat side of the band," says Bradley's Almanac (www.bradleysalmanac.com), "'The Courage Of Others' is a drastically moodier affair - the band takes a fair amount of risk within the sonic box they've placed themselves in."
