Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. On February 1, the most blogged musical group according to The Hype Machine is French alternative rock band Phoenix, whose album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix won Best Alternative Album on January 31 at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards. In second and third place are Baltimore-based indie duo Beach House and Canadian electronic artist Caribou.
German "indietronic" band Lali Puna is in the top ten Monday following the release of the single "Remember." Formed in 1998, the band has released three studio albums; Our Inventions, the band's fourth album and the first to come out since 2004, is due out in April. The blog Clicky Clicky Music (jbreitling.blogspot.com) wrote of "Remember," "[t]he midtempo toe-tapper pairs fronter Valerie Trebeljahr's voice with partner Micha Acher's, but it is largely electronics in the fore that drive the track. Fans will find that Lali Puna's skill at crafting pretty and affecting electropop has not diminished during the band's five year absence."
Also in the blogs is Holly Miranda, garnering attention with her new single "Waves." Music blogs and mainstream media began buzzing about the Brooklyn-based singer/guitarist - who previously fronted The Jealous Girlfriends - when one of her tracks was posted on Kanye West's blog. In a 2009 concert review, The New York Times called her "a less fearful Cat Power, a more substantive Feist, a Norah Jones with actual feeling." Miranda's debut album, The Magician's Private Library, is due out February 23.
