From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

An ex-Morrissey fan is planning an "anti-racism party" to coincide with the former Smiths singer's upcoming gig in Manchester, to protest his support of far-right leader Tommy Robinson.

Morrissey caused yet another controversy earlier this month when he criticised the "shocking treatment" of the English Defence League leader, who was jailed for 13 months after being found in contempt of court.

The "Still Ill" singer also repeated his support for right-wing party For Britain, which was set up by ex-Ukip candidate Anne Marie Waters.

These latest antics proved the final straw for some longtime fans, who are now planning to throw a free anti-racism party - "One Nation Under A Groove" - at Revolution bar in Manchester, from 3pm until midnight on 8 July.

Former Morrissey fan Dave Haslam - a DJ, journalist and writer - explained: "Morrissey has attracted controversy for a host of remarks and opinions - including undermining the #MeToo campaign and claming there's "not difference between eating animals and paedophilia".

Morrissey has often courted controversy with remarks on race, sexism and politics: He once referred to Chinese people as a "sub-species", called Berlin the "rape capital of Europe" and claimed "halal slaughter requires certification that can only be given by supporters of Isis".

He has denied accusations of racism, commenting: "As far as racism goes, the modern loony left seem to forget that Hitler was left-wing".

Haslam continued: "Manchester is our home. It's a city built on immigration, a city with an amazing legacy of great bands and wonderful clubs. Morrissey hasn't lived in the city for 30 years - he lives abroad in tax exile - and has now joined the ranks of various right-wing politicians, tax exiles, tabloids and media hate slingers seeking to divide our community."

Morrissey fans are invited to attend either before or after the concert, with donations accepted for the charity Love Music Hate Racism.
