Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Fresh from her brilliantly scuzzy set at Glastonbury, Miley Cyrus has debuted the video for the latest single from her recent EP She Is Coming. And it’s a doozy: a latex-heavy deconstruction of sex and gender and the human body, and one that acts as a stirring distillation of Cyrus’s rebellious artistry and increasingly political output.

‘Mother’s Daughter’ is an assault of striking images, with Cyrus crawling on the floor and attacking the camera while dressed in a blood-red latex ensemble and face shield. “Don’t f*** with my freedom”, she snarls, as proclamations including “every woman is a riot” and “virginity is a social construct” flash across the screen.

Another setup sees Cyrus astride a horse and carrying a sword while dressed in a metallic gold bikini top, channelling a modern, post-gender Joan of Arc.

Accompanying her are a diverse collection of women and non-binary figures, including disabled and trans model Aaron Philip, queer skateboarder Lacey Baker, activist Mari Copeny and Cyrus’s own mother Tish.

Billboard Magazine has confirmed that Cyrus conceptualised the clip’s hyper-stylised visuals alongside director Alexandre Moors, who previously directed the Kanye West short film Cruel Summer and videos for Kendrick Lamar and Lorde.

‘Mother’s Daughter’ is the latest single from the recent She Is Coming, the first EP in a three-part series from Cyrus that will be released throughout 2019.
