From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

You might expect Miley Cyrus' choice of live cover song to be some sort of nursery rhyme where the key chorus words are changed to 'lollipop' and 'penis' or something, but curiously she chose to cover The Smiths' "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" in Belfast on Monday night.

Cyrus went with the 1986 track for a concert at the Odyssey Arena, giving a performance much like Morrissey's, if he thrusted rhythmically in a one-piece while taking tongue-out selfies on a smartphone.

Actually, as the fan footage shows, it was quite a tender performance, almost as though you could see the 21-year-old women in there somewhere craving to be singing something more real than the alphabetti spaghetti and twerking tomfoolery of We Can't Stop.

This isn't the first time Miley has chosen a classic song to cover live, last week on her Bangerz tour she was joined by The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd for a performance of The Beatles' "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", with whom she has also been writing songs for her next album.
