From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The success of Uptown Special- which features two collaborations with Stevie Wonder – is also the first time Ronson has topped the album charts having peaked at number two with his last two albums: Version in 2007 and Record Collection in 2010.
This is the sixth non-consecutive week that Ronson’s single “Uptown Funk” which features Bruno Mars has topped the charts. The single has combined sales to date of more than 120,000 and was streamed 2.562 million times in the last seven days, the Official Charts Company said.
"This is absolutely incredible. I want to thank Jeff Bhasker, Michael Chabon and Emile Haynie who were there since the very beginning of this record - as well as Alison Donald, Mark Terry and Jason Iley at Sony UK,” Ronson told OfficialCharts.com.
"And finally, thank you to everyone who went out to the shop and bought the CD or pointed and clicked on Uptown Special this week - I really can't believe it."
Ronson is the first act to achieve the official charts double since Miley Cyrus topped the singles chart with “Wrecking Ball” and the albums chart with Bangerz back in October 2013.
This week's second-highest new entry in the albums chart comes from Fall Out Boy, who after leading the chart at the midweek stage finish in second place with their sixth studio album American Beauty/American Psycho, trailing Uptown Special by less than 1,900 copies.
Ed Sheeran is at number three with X, Sam Smith is at number four with In The Lonely Hour, and George Ezra is at number five with Wanted On Voyage.
Following its surprise release on Tuesday, Icelandic singer-songwriter Bjork entered the charts at number 11 with Vulnicura - her first top 20 album in eight years.
US singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor is this week's highest climber in the singles charts this week, jumping 48 places to number two with “Lips Are Movin'”.
