From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Your support makes all the difference. She might not want a lot for Christmas, but Mariah Carey’s Christmas song, "All I want for Christmas is You", has sold 1 million copies 20 years since its release.
In the run-up to Christmas it appears the British public can’t get enough of Mariah frolicking in the snow, with 68,000 copies of the single sold this year.
The Official Charts Company announced today the single had reached the one million mark, making it one of the UK's best-selling hits.
The cheesy Christmas song, which was first released in 1994, has generated an estimated $50 million in royalties globally.
"All I Want for Christmas Is You joins" only eight other festive tracks to reach the one million landmark, including Bing Crosby’s "White Christmas" and the ubiquitous Band Aid track "Do They Know It’s Christmas".
But the news may be small fry to the multi-award winning singer, who is one of the all-time most commercially successful music artists, having sold an estimated 200 million records worldwide.
Even so, the US singer sent a thank you message to fans, saying: “I just landed back in the US after performing a charity show in Africa for the Red Cross and I'm driving home looking at the snow in my hometown of NYC, celebrating selling 1 million copies of 'All I Want for Christmas is You' in the UK. Thank you, thank you to all of my British fans! Love, Mariah xxxx.”
