Louis Tomlinson has said his friendship with former One Direction bandmate Zayn Malik has deteriorated.

Tomlinson claimed that, while the group’s other member Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Niall Horan flew from around the world to watch him perform on X Factor just days after his mother’s death, Malik had not made the journey.

The singer says that Malik’s no-show to his performance of “Just Hold On” placed further strain on their relationship.

“Truthfully, it never really got better,” Tomlinson said on The Dan Wootton Interview podcast.

“I had a couple of calls with him after I lost my mum and all the boys had agreed to come to that performance and he didn’t show so that really bugged me.”

Discussing the X Factor performance, which took place three days after his mother Johannah Deakin died aged 43 from cancer, Tomlinson said: “I’ve got goosebumps now.”

“It was just seeing everyone there – Harry, Niall and Liam – that was what I needed that night, that support,” he added.

Referencing Malik, Tomlinson said: “So on the other end of the spectrum, it kind of really showed. So, eh, I hope he’s all right, but...”

The 27-year-old also hinted he may have quit being a judge on the X Factor amid Simon Cowell’s plans for an overhaul of the show.

Cowell is reportedly planning on replacing contestants with celebrities. Asked whether he would return to the programme, Tomlinson said: “I don’t know, honestly.”
