X Factor winners Little Mix have become the first British girl group to debut in the US top five - beating even the Spice Girls.

The quartet shot into the Billboard chart at number four after selling 50,000 copies of their first release DNA.

And they were applauded for their achievement by X Factor boss Simon Cowell, who sent an online message saying: "Congratulations Little Mix. Very proud of you."

The album has sold more than two million copies around the world and their team prepared for their US assault by mobilising their fanbase online and making personal appearances ahead of the release.

The Spice Girls entered the US chart at number six when they released first album Spice in 1997.

Little Mix, whose hits include chart-topper "Wings", responded to Cowell with a message on Twitter which read: "Thank you so much Simon. Thank you for all your support from day one."

The group have had further help in the US by the inclusion of "Wings" in an edition of hit show Glee and contestants on this season's American Idol covered the song.

On Friday they will appear at ABC's Good Morning America annual Summer Concert Series in New York.
