From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Frustrated fans of Lauryn Hill took to Twitter last night to criticise the singer after she arrived an hour and a half late for a show at the O2 Brixton Academy.

The gig was the first of five UK performances in half a decade from the former member of The Fugees but unfortunately it was mired in controversy.

From the 90-minute wait for the singer to the supporting acts to technical issues, there were plenty of disappointed fans in the nearly 5,000-seat auditorium.

One of the DJs at the concert left the crowd cold after they asked if any members of the audience were from the West Coast of America despite the show being in London.

The fan ire was such that “Lauryn Hill” started trending on Twitter, with one user called Yuichi commenting; “Lauryn hill is the most disappointing concert I have ever been to. It’s heartbreaking.”

When Hill did emerge, her set caused further criticism when she performed remixed version of her hits and the sound quality and was booed by the audience.

She has only released one album in 1998, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and an unplugged album, which may be why the revamped arrangements of her hits did not go down well with the audience.

The show only picked up towards the end when she sang ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’ but it came a little too late.

Amongst the detractors, some leapt to the singer’s defence. British author Bonnie Greer posted “Btw: Sorry to see @MsLaurynHill's first show slammed on here. Unfortunately, geniuses are sometimes not up to our standards. #LaurynHill”.

While another user called Babs described the performance as “art” and told fans not to complain.

The singer who is on Twitter, but appears to be an infrequent user of the social network, has remained quiet about the incident.

Hill will be performing again tonight at the Brixton Academy.
