From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Grammy Awards will commemorate the passing of music legend David Bowie with a special performance from Lady Gaga.

The tribute will coincide with the musician's posthumous lifetime achievement award which he will receive at next month's ceremony.

The organisers have revealed that they decided to induct Gaga into their planned tribute, described as 'experimental', almost immediately.

"We had already booked Lady Gaga on this year's show, but when David passed, almost in a single moment, we knew we had to change direction," said executive producer Ken Ehrlich.

"We immediately spoke and agreed that she should be the one to honour David; she's perfect for it."

In the past, Lady Gaga has made no secret about the influence Bowie has had upon her career. In a Hollywood Reporter podcast conducted days before his death, Gaga said: "When I fell in love with David Bowie... I always felt that his glamour was something he was using to express a message to people that was very healing for their souls.

"He is a true, true artist and I don't know if I ever went 'Oh, I'm going to be that way like this,' or if I arrived upon it slowly, realising it was my calling."

Nile Rodgers - the frontman of Chic who worked with Bowie on his 1983 record Let's Dance - will choreograph the performance.

Bowie - who has matched a chart record with Elvis Presley following the release of new album Blackstar - will also be honoured at this year's Brit Awards on 24 February.

The Grammy Awards take place in LA on 15 February.
