Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Kacey Musgraves has been awarded the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, beating competition from the likes of Janelle Monae, Cardi B, Drake and Brandi Carlile.

Musgraves won for her 2018 full-length, Golden Hour. The Album of the Year prize was her fourth Grammy of the night.

“It was unbelievable to be even in a category with such gigantic albums ... it's really crazy. But I'm very thankful,” she said in an acceptance speech. “Art is really thriving and it's been really beautiful to see that. I would have nothing without songs. To me, it's just all about the songs.”

Golden Hour was co-produced by Musgraves, Ian Fitchuk, and Daniel Tashian. She also took home awards for Best Country Album, Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance.

Recent winners of Album of the Year include Bruno Mars in 2018, Adele in 2017 and Taylor Swift in 2016.

This year showed a noticeable shift to recognise more female artists during the ceremony. The vast majority of performers were women, including Cardi B, Brandi Carlile, Musgraves, Jennifer Lopez, St Vincent and Dua Lipa, Dolly Parton and Diana Ross, and it was women who took whom most of the top prizes over the course of the evening.
