From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

‘Squeaky clean’ teen pop idol Justin Bieber has apologised for smoking cannabis on Saturday Night Live.

Speaking in the third person, the 18-year-old indirectly apologised during a sketch where he was dressed up as the president of the Miley Cyrus Fan Club.

He reacted to news that Justin Bieber was going to come on the Miley Cyrus show by saying: “'I also heard he got busted for smoking weed and he’s really sorry about it and people make mistakes and he’s never gonna do it again."

He referred to himself as a “douche”, saying that Miley was his favourite singer and “light years better than that douche Justin Bieber”.

The star was snapped holding a questionable cigarette as he left a hotel party shortly after splitting from his girlfriend Selena Gomez in January.

After being caught on camera he tweeted: "Every day growing and learning, trying to be better. I never want to let any of you down."

Bieber was keen to confirm his relationship with Gomez was over on Saturday Night Live, handing out roses to women in the audience while declaring “tonight, I’m looking for a future Mrs Bieber”.

The popstar appeared on the show hours before the Grammy awards in LA, which he did not attend after failing to receive any nominations.
