Your support makes all the difference.While most of the Twittersphere cannot get enough of Tom Odell’s cover of John Lennon’s song “Real Love”, some fans are less than impressed.
The singer's cover of John Lennon’s 1979 song debuted this morning after John Lewis released its annual Christmas advert on YouTube.
The reaction to Odell’s cover has been predominately positive, with many fans tweeting that John Lewis have “nailed it again” with their advert.
But some are less impressed that the 23-year-old artist from Chichester has been chosen to cover the music legend’s song.
One Twitter user called “Hayton” wrote: “Covers should only be done by an artist of the same stature that they’re covering. Tom Odell should be covering someone pish, not John Lennon,” while Mark Hitchcock tweeted: “The new John Lewis advert is quite sweet. But Tom Odell butchering Lennon/ The Beatles is a disgrace.”
The John Lewis advert has become well-known for featuring covers of well-known tracks, from Lily Allen’s version of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” to Ellie Goulding’s cover of Elton John’s “Your Song” in 2010.
Allen’s “Somewhere Only We Know” went on to top the UK singles chart last Christmas.
This year’s John Lewis advert, featuring Monty the penguin playing with his friend Sam, will air on TV in an advert break during Gogglebox this Friday.
