From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have confirmed that they have split up.

The couple, who have been dating since 2017, announced on the Today show on Thursday (15 April) that their relationship had come to an end after attempts to fix their problems failed.

A joint statement from the singer and former baseball player reads: “We have realised we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects.

“We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”

Reports that the couple had broken up first emerged in March, suggesting that Rodriguez had been socialising away from his fiancé in recent weeks.

However, both Lopez and Rodriguez denied the claims, confirming that their engagement was still on and that they were “working through some things”, adding in a separate statement that all reports of a split were “inaccurate”.

Rodriguez proposed to the “On The Floor” singer in the Bahamas in March 2019 after they had dated for two years.

Their wedding was postponed twice during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the pair saying that they would get married “when the time is right”.
