From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Last month, it was announced that music sensation Taylor Swift was dating Britsh actor Tom Hiddleston when photos of the two, nestled together uber-romantically atop a set of rocks, surfaced online.

Many were initially confused – wasn't she overcoming a recent split from DJ Cavin Harris? but then a fresh batch of photos surfaced this week causing the world to really question what on earth was going on. Could him from The Night Manager really be in love with the "Shake It Off" singer? His t-shirt would have you believe so. Not to mention his tattoo.

Whatever the situation, it's only fair to point out that, despite being renowned figures, these two are only human beings and deserve to do whatever the hell they want. However, the romance being so on the nose so uniquely out of character (for the debonair Hiddleston, anyway) many are calling the couple's bluff, devising their own theories in the process.

One, spotted on Buzzfeed, has stuck: could Tom Hiddleston be the star of an elaborately-planned Taylor Swift music video? Let's survey the evidence...

The romantic rock-kissing, the hand-holding in Rome, the seaside stroll in Suffolk; these events all predated the recent 4 July celebrations in the sea kitted out in a t-shirt emblazoned with 'I TS.' It all seems like a music video and one that bears a striking similarity to that of Swift song "Wildest Dreams" which tells the story of a romance that is ultimately revealed to be two actors performing on the set of a film.

Could Swift be filming her very own visual album starring High-Rise actor Hiddleston (who is very much the man-of-the-moment following the US airing of The Night Manager)?

Perhaps this would explain a few things: one why the two are being exclusively followed around by the same paparazzi agency, and two why Swift has offered no update on a new record despite the two-year anniversary of latest album 1989 crawling ever closer (two years is usually her maximum for new releases).

Maybe Swift is going to drop unannounced new material à la Beyoncé's Lemonade?

Now, the evident absence of cameras in all of these press photos would count this theory out completely however, for the ploy to be elaborate, we're sure the skilled paps would be permitted their own time to capture shots without the cameras in their periphery. The placement of all of Tay-Tay's friends (Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, et al) smacks of the "Bad Blood" video which itself boasted a whole array of celebrity cameos.

Still, the fact remains Hiddleston and Swift could be a genuine item and if they are people should be happy for them. Swift has been vocal in the past about people's "slut-shaming" views on her dating habits and, when all is said and done, regardless of whether the joke is on the public or not, we're playing into the notion that a famous 26-year-old girl is unable to date who she wants without the world criticising her decision.

Still, the fact remains: wearing a t-shirt declaring love for your girlfriend will never be a good look.
