From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Viewers were left speculating over what Harry Styles said during his Grammys acceptance speech after part of it was censored.

Comedian Trevor Noah hosted the socially distanced ceremony at the 63rd Grammy Awards last night (14 March) from the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

Styles – who also performed at the high-profile event – picked up his first-ever Grammy, winning Best Pop Solo Performance with his 2019 hit single “Watermelon Sugar”.

When accepting the award, the former One Director star said: “Thank you so much and I feel very grateful to be here,” before American network CBS cut out his audio.

After the lengthy bleeped pause, the 27-year-old added: “Thank you so much. I feel very honoured to be among all of you.”

Viewers watching from America were quick to voice their confusion on social media. One user wrote: “What exactly did Harry Styles say that had to be bleeped?.... Somebody tell me.”

Another added: “Someone figure out what was bleeped out”.

Viewers outside of America, who were watching the broadcast without the US Federal Communications Commission regulations were able to shed some light on the matter and reveal that Styles had said: “All these songs are f***ing massive.”

The FCC prohibits the airing of “indecent” or “profane” content on broadcast television between 6am and 10pm. Styles’s acceptance speech occurred before the 10pm cut-off.

One user in Australia wrote: “Love how in Australia they didn’t bleep out Harry saying f***ing but everywhere else did.”

Another added: “On German TV they didn’t bleep it and he said ‘all of these songs are f***ing massive so thank you so much.’”

Styles was up against Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift in the competitive category.

However, the singer missed out on two of his other nominations, including for Best Pop Vocal Album – which was won by Dua Lipa – and Best Music video, which went to “Brown Skin Girl” by Beyonce, Saint Jhn and Wizkid featuring Blue Ivy Carter.
