From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Lily Allen has said she is “so happy” that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “escaped” the UK.

On Sunday (14 February) night, the couple announced that they were expecting a second child, sharing a black and white photo highlighting Markle’s bump.

“We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother,” a spokesperson for the couple said.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”

However, while most people celebrated the news – which comes after Markle suffered a miscarriage in July – some critics, such as divisive talk show presenter Piers Morgan, accused the couple of ignoring their wish to step down from the royal family and be left alone by the press.

“They don’t want privacy,” Morgan tweeted. “They want publicity but only if it’s positive. So today they let all the papers they hate publish their baby announcement photo because it enhances their brand. A few days ago, they were trashing the same papers as dehumanising invaders of their privacy.”

On Monday (15 February) afternoon, singer-songwriter Allen offered up her own thoughts on the backlash.

“Ugh the British media/establishment is so angry with Meghan for showing the world how irrelevant and unnecessary they are,” she tweeted.

“They will stop at nothing to try and destroy her. I’m so happy for them that they escaped.”

Claiming that the tabloids would “already have known” Markle was pregnant, she added: “There will have been a bounty out to get that first picture of the bump, and by putting out their own picture and getting ahead of the story they reduce the risk of putting her in physical danger.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were expecting their second child days after Markle won a privacy case against the Mail on Sunday over the publication of a “personal and private” handwritten letter to her estranged father.
