Grammys 2016: Nobody can believe Kendrick Lamar didn't win Album or Record of the Year

'Love Taylor but Kendrick deserved best album. So few artists write albums that are actually cohesive and not a few good singles w/ fillers.'

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Kendrick Lamar's 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly was universally revered by critics, beloved by President Obama and contained a track that would become a rallying cry for America. Last night it lost out at the Grammys to Taylor Swift's 1989.

While Kendrick did pick up five awards early in the evening including Rap Album of the Year, he was overlooked in the main categories he was tipped for, losing the album award to Taylor and record award to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk.

Here's a small sample of a very large group of people who couldn't believe it:

Swift made obvious reference to her detractors during her acceptance speech, though she didn't specifically name Kanye West.

"I want to thank the fans for the last ten years," she said. "As the first woman to win Album of the Year twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.

"If you just focus on the work, and you don't let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you're going, you'll look around and know it's you and the people who love you who put you there. That will be the greatest feeling in the world!"
