From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Wham! star Andrew Ridgeley still has “a number of questions” about his best friend and former bandmate George Michael’s death.

Michael died aged 53 on Christmas day in 2016 at his home in Oxfordshire. The coroner ruled his death as being due to a heart condition, and therefore not suspicious.

However, in his new autobiography, George and Me, Ridgeley wrote: “He seemed to be in good health and there are conflicting reports surrounding that night that preceded his passing.

“That the circumstances of his death seemed unclear only compounded the distress. Without any real closure the grieving seemed terribly raw.

“A heart condition was eventually recorded as the cause of death, but there are still a number of questions. It now seems as if we may never know what really happened.”

Ridgeley added: “We don’t like our lives being monitored, so when someone dies alone, perhaps there are always answers that remain out of reach.

“It still feels uncomfortable though. God knows what it must be like for George’s family.”

After news of Michael’s death broke, Fadi Fawaz, the singer's partner, said he found the star dead when he arrived to wake him ahead of a planned Christmas Day lunch.

"I never saw him. I fell asleep in my car and I never saw him that night," Mr Fawaz told the Mirror. "The police know everything - that's the most important thing."

In July, hairdresser Fawaz, who had been squatting in Michael’s house since his death, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated criminal damage after he allegedly smashed windows at the mansion.
