Frozen soundtrack beats Ed Sheern's X to become best-selling album of 2014 so far

The soundtrack to Disney’s animated film Frozen has beaten Ed Sheeran’s X to become the best-selling album of 2014 so far.

The official soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film has sold 708,000 copies in the first nine months of the year, 74,000 more copies than Ed Sheeran’s X has sold in the same period.

Ed Sheeran’s follow-up album X spent 14 weeks at number one after its release in July, earning the most consecutive weeks at the top spot since Adele’s 21 was released in January 2011.

But with three months of 2014 left, Ed Sheeran’s album could still beat the Frozen score by New Year’s Eve.

The Frozen soundtrack also currently tops the best-selling compilation album chart of 2014, beating four Now That’s What I Call Music albums, including Now 87, Now 88, Now 86 and Now That’s What I Call 21st Century.

The film’s signature song “Let It Go”, performed by Idina Menzel, has been named the tenth biggest-selling single of 2014 so far.

Released in November 2013, Frozen took over $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office to become the most successful animated film of all time.

The film went on to win two Oscars for Original Song and Animated Feature.

Disney has confirmed a short sequel, Frozen Fever, will be released in spring 2015 featuring characters Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf.
