The as-yet-untitled record will be the eighth studio album and celebrates American music history, with the band recording eight tracks in eight cities across the US.
The songs were recorded in Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington DC and New York. Each track features local legends from each of the cities and has taken inspiration from the unique music of the areas.
Lead singer Dave Grohl has described the new album and series as “a love letter to the history of American music.”
This as-yet-untitled HBO mini-series will document the recording of the album, with Grohl in the director’s seat.
Each episode of the series will feature interviews with artists from the different regions and discuss how these cities shaped their music.
Grohl made his directorial debut in 2013 with the critically-acclaimed, Grammy-winning feature film Sound City, which chronicled the history of the Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, Los Angeles.
It has been three years since Foo Fighters released their last album Wasting Light, which won five Grammy Awards.
The HBO series will air in on the eve of the Foo Fighters twentieth anniversary.
