Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sir Elton John put on a rousing performance of his hit song, “I’m Still Standing”, as part of the One World: Together at Home concert.
Performing on a grand piano in his back garden, the legendary artist appeared on excellent form as he paid tribute to the healthcare workers on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.
John, who was introduced by his friends David and Victoria Beckham, was one of a number of major pop stars who took part in the concert, which was organised as a “thank you” to everyone helping to beat Covid-19.
Other artists to take part include Sir Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, Niall Horan, Luis Fonsi, Maluma, Lady Gaga, Annie Lennox and her daughter, Lola.
Lady Gaga, who helped to organise the event along with charity Global Citizen and the World Health Organisation, posted a video of herself dancing to Elton John’s performance on her Instagram story.
Earlier on in the concert, she sang a moving rendition of the song “Smile”.
One World: Together at Home included hosting duties by late-night show titans Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert.
Actors including Pierce Brosnan, Amy Poehler and Samuel L Jackson issued personal messages of thanks to healthcare workers, as well as everyone practising social distancing and government instructions to stay at home.
