From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

While the Grammys are known for breaking conventions, it’s doubtful the organisers meant to spell Cory Monteith’s name wrong at the awards on Sunday night.

During a memorial tribute for the late Glee star, a photo of the actor appeared with his name misspelled in the subtitle, confusing the ‘e’ with the ‘i’.

The credit read: “Cory Montieth, Glee actor, singer”.

The error was quickly picked up by Glee fans, who voiced their disappointment and upset on Twitter.

One tweeted: “Dear Recording Academy it’s 2014 & no one has spell check? His name is Cory MONTEITH!!! Fire the fact check clerk!”

Another wrote: “They misspelled Cory Monteith’s last name. Proofreading is a lost art. And in this case, a loss of respect too. #GRAMMYs.”

One fan tweeted that the error was “like a stab in the heart all over again”.

Monteith, who played quarterback-turned-singer Finn Hudson in hit Fox series Glee, died of a drug and alcohol overdose at the age of 31 in July 2013.

He was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room on 13 July, the day he was due to check out.  Police described his death as “ accidental”.

A coroner’s report in October revealed a hypodermic needle, a spoon with drug residue and two empty bottles of champagne were found in his hotel room.
