From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Folk singer John Prine is in ‘critical’ condition after contracting coronavirus.

Prine has been hospitalised since Thursday 26 March after suffering symptoms of Covid-19.

In a statement shared to Twitter by Prine’s family, they said: “After a sudden onset of Covid-19 symptoms, John was hospitalised on Thursday (3/26). He was intubated on Saturday evening, and continues to receive care, but his situation is critical.”

“This is hard news for us to share,” the post continued. “But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love and support now. And know that we love you, and John loves you.”

On 20 March, Prine’s wife revealed on Instagram that she had contracted the virus, but said that her husband’s status at the time was “indeterminate”.

The “Angel From Montgomery” songwriter is a hugely respected performer who is often cited as one of the best and most influential songwriters of his generation.

Heartfelt tributes and prayers from stars including Mark Hamill and Kumail Nanjiani poured in on Twitter in response to the news.

Prine has previously undergone successful treatment for cancer in 1998 and 2013, which placed him in the “high risk” coronavirus cateogory.
