Police said Chester Bennington, 41, had hanged himself in a private residence just as Mr Cornell had done.
In an emotional tribute, Bennington sang Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at Mr Cornell's funeral in May 2017.
While there was no video of the performance, a video from outside the event was recorded, in which you can hear him singing the song. It shows just how powerful Bennington's voice could be:
Bennington and Mr Cornell had been good friends prior to Mr Cornell's suicide. The "Crawling" singer even wrote an open letter to Mr Cornell after his death.
"I'm still weeping, with sadness, as well as gratitude," Bennington wrote, adding that Mr Cornell "inspired me in many ways you could never have known." He wrote, "I can't imagine a world without you in it."
Bennington is survived by six children and according to TMZ had a history of substance and alcohol abuse. It would have been Mr Cornell's 53rd birthday the same day Bennington killed himself.
Linkin Park, which is currently on tour, became popular with hits such as "In the End" and a collaboration with Jay Z.
