Cher raises £1.5m for Joe Biden at LGBT+ virtual fundraiser: ‘Do you believe in life after Trump?’

Your support makes all the difference.Pop icon Cher has raised $2m (£1.5m) for the Joe Biden presidential campaign at a virtual LGBTQ-focused fundraiser on Monday (31 August).
Cher asked the streaming crowd if they “believe in life after Trump”, riffing on the lyrics of her hit single, “Believe”.
The singer was introduced by Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Buttigieg made history as the first gay major-party candidate to win delegates. Other openly gay lawmakers were also in attendance, including Congressman David Cicilline and Senator Tammy Baldwin.
Appearing at the event, Biden vowed to sign the Equality Act into law within his first 100 days in office. The Equality Act would amend civil rights laws to explicitly protect LGBTQ people from discrimination.
On the same day as the fundraiser, the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) endorsed Biden in his run for president.
In the past, Cher has raised funds for other Democratic presidential candidates. In 2016, the star hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton in Fire Island, New York.
Four years earlier, the singer joined Julia Roberts and Ellen DeGeneres in hosting a star-studded LGBTQ fundraiser for Barack Obama in Los Angeles.
