From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With little more than a week to go until the 2020 US presidential election, Cher has issued a musical endorsement of Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
The “Believe” singer performed a re-written version of the 1943 Harold Arlen song “Happiness is a Thing Called Joe” during an I Will Vote concert on Sunday.
Arlen wrote the original song for the film musical Cabin in the Sky. The reworked song was released officially on Monday (26 October).
Cher has long been a vocal critic of the current administration, and US president Donald Trump.
John Legend, Pink and Andra Day were also among those performing at the concert in aid of Biden and Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for Vice President.
“It seems like happiness is just a thing called Joe,” sings Cher in the number. “He’s got a smile that makes the lilacs wanna grow.”
“Right now our country’s gloomy, fear is in the air / But when Joe’s president, hope is everywhere,” she continues. “Joe will keep us safe - that’s all we need to know.”
Cher joins a plethora of celebrities to throw their endorsement behind Joe Biden. Another was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who had never publicly endorsed a candidate before.
Avengers star Mark Ruffalo was one of several celebrities to condemn Trump on social media after watching the latest presidential debate.
Cher’s version of “Happiness is a Thing Called Joe” is now available to stream on music services including Spotify.
