The video for the track, which features Megan Thee Stallion, was released on Friday with guest appearances from Jenner, Normani, Rosalia, Rubi Rose, Sukihana and Mulatto.
However, some fans took issue with Jenner featuring in the video due to her and the Kardashian family’s alleged appropriation of black culture.
“Normani did ALL this and Kylie walked down the hall and opened a door,” one Twitter user wrote. “If that’s not a perfect visual indication of Black women having to do the most and white women do the bare minimum to get somewhere, I don’t know what is.”
A petition calling for Jenner to be removed from the “WAP” video currently has 64,000 signatures. Its description reads: “The video was perfect until we saw K and I wanted to throw my phone.”
Addressing the comments on Sunday (9 August), Cardi wrote in a series of since-deleted tweets: “Why did I put Kylie on my music video? She treated my sister and daughter so lovely at her kid’s bday party.”
Cardi then explained that her husband Offset was “real close” with Travis Scott, the father of Kylie’s daughter and that Kris Jenner had given Cardi lots of advice.
“Not everything is about race,” she continued. “There’s issues out here in the world that it is about race that I preach all the time about. This is not about f***in race.”
The rapper first seemingly responded to the criticism following the video’s release on Friday as she thanked the women who appeared in her video.
“It was so important to me to include different women, that are different races and come from different backgrounds but are so powerful and influential,” she wrote.
