From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Cardi B has shared her thoughts on the US government shutdown.

In a video posted to Instagram, the rapper berated Trump and suggested to fans that it was time for action, sharing her frustration that federal workers are currently being expected to work without pay.

“Hey y’all! I just want to remind you because it has been a little over three weeks,” she said. “Trump is now ordering, as in summoning, federal government workers to go back to work without getting paid.”

She warned anyone about to compare the shutdown with the one that occurred during Obama's presidency, which lasted 17 days, during the dispute over the Affordable Care Act, that: "b****, that was for healthcare."

"So your grandma could go check her blood pressure and you b****** could go check your p**** at the gynecologist with no motherf****** problem."

“Our country is in a hell hole right now," she added. "We really need to take this serious. I feel like we need to take some action. B****, I'm scared."
