The Grammy-winning rapper appeared yesterday at a New York court after being indicted, along with two members of her entourage, on 12 charges of assault, harassment, conspiracy and second-degree reckless endangerment. If convicted, she could face up to four years in prison.
Cardi is accused of arranging an attack on two bartenders at the Angels Gentleman’s Club in Queens last August, who claim they were injured by flying bottles and chairs thrown at them inside the club.
“The defendants in this case are accused of two premeditated attacks on two women working at a club in Queens last summer,” acting Queens District Attorney John M Ryan said in a statement. “The victims allegedly had glass bottles hurled at them, alcoholic drinks thrown in their faces and one woman’s head was slammed into the bar. This kind of violence won’t be tolerated in our community. The defendants will be held accountable for their alleged actions.”
Cardi, real name Belcalis Almanzar, was arrested in October and charged with two misdemeanour counts or reckless endangerment and one misdemeanour count of assault. But she rejected a possible plea deal in April, leading prosecutors to further investigate the incident and take the case to a grand jury. Cardi’s attorney Drew Findling said in court that he anticipated “a positive outcome” for his client.
Cardi herself has so far appeared confident about her legal troubles, last weekend telling fans at a pre-BET Awards concert in Los Angeles: “F*** you mean? I ain’t going to jail, I got a daughter!”
