But now it seems the Libertine is going for a more direct route to fund his existence in Paris (where he is reportedly sharing a flat with Home Alone’s Macaulay Culkin) by selling off fag butts smoked by his famous acquaintances.
The rocker has revealed he is planning to set up a stall in Camden Market purveying rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia (“all kinds of sh*t, basically”) that includes the fag ends smoked by former girlfriend Kate Moss and his late friend “Back to Black” singer Amy Winehouse.
Discussing his money-making scheme with the NME, Doherty said: "I've got fag butts that belong to Bobby Gillespie, Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse, and I've got Christmas paper that [former Coventry City goalkeeper] Steve Ogrizovic sent to the guy from Black Sabbath."
Having previously convinced a Camden gallery to “curate” a selection of “curiosities” salvaged from the mansion he used to rent from Lord Cardigan, Doherty is evidently trying to find other means to capitalise on his assets. Speaking to the The Independent 18 months ago Doherty described the piles of "silks, bones, leathers, skulls, palettes – what's that thing you put canvases on? – oh yeah, easels, frames, boots, laces, wigs, mannequins..."that he has accumulated over the years.
Three months after his exhibition at the Cob gallery (where paintings made from Doherty’s blood were on sale), the Babyshambles frontman auctioned off a selection of “prized possessions” including his “his private diaries, military jackets from the band's glory days, guitars and a selection of personal trinkets”.
Doherty is planning a headline UK tour with the Babyshambles from September when the band’s new record is due for release. Describing the album, which has been three years in the making, Doherty said: “It's a strong record. Stephen Street has pulled it out of the bag, I think. And there's a special guest on one of the songs. We're not saying who it is yet, but you'll like it."
The "What A Waster" singer, whose career has been marred by drug addictions and brief spells in prison, was ejected from The Libertines, at the height of their success, by his one-time best friend Carl Barât, in 2003. Doherty went on to front Babyshambles and also produced a solo record called Grace/Wastelands in 2009. In 2010 a reformed Libertines played a series of shows including the Reading and Leeds Festivals.
