Once Upon a One More Time revolves around a number of fairytale princesses, including Cinderella, The Little Mermaid and Snow White, who meet regularly for a book club.
Their traditional morals are upended, however, when a fairy godmother arrives with a copy of The Feminine Mystique, inspiring the princesses to embrace feminism and seek more from their lives.
Officially endorsed by Spears herself, Once Upon a One More Time weaves in a number of the pop star’s biggest songs, including “Stronger”, “Toxic” and “Oops! I Did It Again”.
Four Weddings and a Funeral actor Simon Callow, who is one of the UK’s most respected stars of theatre and screen, will appear as the narrator of the musical.
Briga Heelan, of Netflix’s Great News, and American Idol finalist Justin Guarini will portray Cinderella and Prince Charming, respectively.
In a statement, Spears said: “I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs – especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore.”
She added: “This is a dream come true for me!”
Once Upon a One More Time will begin a short run in Chicago on 14 April, before transferring to Broadway for an official opening on 30 July.
